More than two thirds of Scottish peatlands are are thought to be in intermediate or bad ecological condition. If current land use remains the same, peatlands will continue to degrade.
Scientists project that in case of business as usual (if no action is taken):
- the area of peatlands in bad ecological condition will increase by 10% in the next 15 years;
- the area of peatlands in good ecological condition will decrease by 10% in the next 15 years.
10% of the peatland area is equivalent to 620 square miles. This area is roughly equal to the size of the Isle of Skye.
