Abstract

Stratoospheric Ozone: Halogen Impacts in a Varying Atmosphere (SHIVA) is an EU-funded project.

Bromine, chlorine and iodine are released from organic gases after they are broken down in the atmosphere. These reactive halogens have the potential to deplete stratospheric ozone if they are transported to higher altitudes. SHIVA aims to reduce uncertainties in the amount of halogen-containing ozone depleting substances (ODSs) reaching the stratosphere and the resulting ozone depletion in a climate that is changing now, and which will change in the future. Areas like the Western Pacific, a region experiencing periods of deep convective events, may provide a route for very short-lived ODSs of oceanic origin to enter the stratosphere. Emission of ODSs in these key regions may also experience enhanced feedbacks as a result of a warming climate. By combining measurements from a number of platforms collected during a dedicated field campaign, SHIVA aims to better predict the rate, timing and climate-sensitivity of ozone-layer recovery, and identify potential risks to that recovery using numerical models.

SHIVA conducted a field campaign in Malaysian Borneo in conjunction with Malaysian research partners. During November and December 2011 the Sonne Research Vessel, DLR Falcon aircraft and land-based investigation teams were deployed to make measurements of key atmospheric constituents (Figure 1).
