Fridges and freezers

Remember: Remove your samples when you are finished.

Any sample that you place in a fridge or a freezer must be labelled according to labelling rules (see above). Please remember to remove samples once you have finished with them. Storing old samples means we have to run more fridges and freezers than necessary and so wasting energy.

KEEP DOORS CLOSED.

Refrigeration

There are fridges in every lab which can be used for sample and chemical storage. However, if the chemical is toxic it must be kept in the locked fridge in 8.130b.

Constant temperature room

This is located in the corridor, outside 9.140 and is used for sample storage.

  • It has a temperature range of -2 to 20°C.
  • If the temperature is going to be changed you will get three working days’ notice to re-home your samples.
  • All samples must be labelled in accordance with standard lab protocols.
  • Do not place cardboard in the constant temperature room, as it rots quickly.
  • The large green button on the inside of the door opens the door from the inside.
  • There is a panic button on the left for the unlikely event that you become trapped. This causes a red flashing light in the corridor.
  • A flashing blue light outside the door indicates that the door is open. If this is the case please close the door but check that no one is inside first.
  • Please close the door gently.

Freezers

There is a large freezer located in the corridor, outside 9.136 and standalone freezers outside 8.130. Both can be used for sample storage and similar rules apply to this space as any the constant temperature room:

–20°C walk-in freezer on main corridor

This is located in the corridor, outside 9.136 and is used for sample storage.

  • Please open the freezer door as little as possible to help maintain temperature.
  • All samples should be stored in labelled boxes to allow you to find your samples quickly.
  • There is a panic button on the left for the unlikely event that you become trapped. This causes a red flashing light in the corridor.
  • The large green button on the inside of the door opens the door from the inside.
  • A flashing blue light outside the door indicates that the door is open. If this is the case please close the door but check that no one is inside first.
  • Please close the door gently.

–20°C standalone freezers

These are located in the corridor, outside 8.130 and should be used for storage of larger items.

  • Please open the freezer door as little as possible to help maintain temperature.
  • All samples should be labelled to allow you to find your samples quickly.

-80°C freezer in 9.138

This freezer is for the deep cold storage of samples. It is not interlocked but when opened closed again a vacuum is created inside so that it can’t be reopened for about 10mins.

Please ask a technician before placing any samples in this freezer.
