Jijal complex

The very deepest parts of the former island arc contain metamorphosed igneous rocks indicative of being buried to depths in excess of 30 km. These rocks - called granulites include garnets that can reach many cm across. Outcrops like these testify to the maturity of the Kohistan arc - perhaps it developed to the same size as Japan or Java today.
