Thrust belts commonly mark the outer edge of collision mountain ranges such as the Alps and Himalayas. In these situations the thrusts don't just appear on their own but in herds! The thrusts can interact to make wonderfully complicated cross-sections. To see some of the features characteristic of thrust belts, click here. In general thrusts are directed outward, away from mountain ranges towards the foreland. But sometimes thrusts can be found, directed back towards the mountain ranges - these are termed "back-thrusts".
