The black line through the centre of the original circle and the tangent to the point where this line crosses the circle are at 90^o to one another. After deformation these lines have the orientations given by the red lines, from which the change in their relative orientation is the angle psi, from which the shear strain gamma can be calculated from gamma = tan(psi).
