The finite geometry of structures can generally be interpreted to have formed by a number of different ways – the non-uniqueness of strain paths. Growth strata offer the opportunity to discriminate between different structural histories. They also provide critical information on geological time, if there is appropriate stratigraphic control, and so offer a way of establishing deformation rates. Clearly the best information is likely to come from the places with the highest stratigraphic resolution. The Neogene record of the Mediterranean is excellent in this regard, with the Sicilian thrust systems providing excellent opportunities.
Some of this work, building stratigraphic knowledge, has impact on climate models in the Mediterranean , especially for the Messinian Salinity Crisis.
