WEST Systems

The WEST Systems team consists of Italian Researchers, Engineers and Technicians with specialisations in electronic engineering, computer sciences and technology applied to Earth, Environmental and Chemical Sciences. The company designs and develops automated instruments for continuous monitoring. Currently 3 Engineers, 2 Computer Sciences Graduates, 1 Earth Sciences Graduate and 4 Technical Staff are involved in relevant projects. The research capabilities of the company are significant, as demonstrated by the implementation of numerous public funded projects in collaboration with universities, public companies and industrial partners.

Role:

Responsible for training and research on in situ environmental technology; with their hosted fellow, will design and develop a continuous monitoring device to measure the concentration of CO2 in water as dissolved gas and to measure sulphide ions, calcium ions as well as pH, redox potential, temperature and conductivity of the water; coordination of network wide complimentary training.

Key Competences and Facilities:

The team's labs are equipped with the laboratory facilities for the design and the testing of digital and analog electronic systems. The lab includes instrumentation for the testing of the performances of gas analyzers and water parameters.

Key Persons:

Giorgio Virgili, Team Leader

Technical Director with 20 years experience in the design and realisation of portable and long term instruments for geochemistry and geophysics and will provide training on instrument design.

Eng. Simone Neri

Electronic Engineer, with 6 years experience in the maintenance and realisation of industrial and scientific equipment; will provide training in design and testing of the new geochemical instrumentation.

Dr. Matia Menichini

Experience in geochemistry; will supervise the ESR in all issues related to geochemical measurements.

Mr. Sandro Mori

10 years experience in the design and management of telecommunications systems and will provide local training on Resource Management.

Previous Training Programs and Research:

The WES team are actively coordinating or participating in largescale EU and international projects (Virgili is Project Manager of a NATO-NAMSA and WEST Systems has obtained UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 Certification on 09/09/2009). The WES team has trained 1 Postdoctoral Fellow and 3 PhD Students on secondments from public sector organisations in the last 5 years.
