Physically, the atmosphere has a clearly defined vertical structure

If density and pressure are plotted against altitude it is found that both decrease with increasing height. However, if temperature is plotted against altitude this vertical profile reveals a series of well defined layers. The existence of these layers helps to explain some well observed meteorological and other physical phenomena.
