Biosphere Contents

1. Organic Matter

The biosphere is part of the wider ecosphere, and overlaps and interacts with the ecosphere's other components

In addition to the biosphere, the ecosphere consists of the lithosphere (the rocks and minerals of the rigid outer shell of the Earth, comprised of the crust and the outermost portion of the mantle), the hydrosphere (the water that covers 71% of the Earth as seas, rivers, ice, snow and water in rocks and soil), and the atmosphere (the surrounding envelope of gases). In each of the spheres there is a component of living material, and this is collectively known as the biosphere. Elements, such as carbon, cycle between living and non-living material and between the various components of the ecosphere in a similar fashion to the hydrological cycle.
