5. Development

If an ecosystem is diverse, this may give it greater stability, because it is more likely that species will be present that can withstand or adapt to changes in environmental conditions, reducing the likelihood of the failure of the entire system

System longevity is important since time may allow an ecosystem to mature and evolve, developing the capacity to support a greater number of ecological niches. This may result in a more diverse ecosystem, promoting the tolerance of the system to change, and thus increasing its resilience. However, physical attributes (climate, topography, geology etc.) will continue to affect the development of the ecosystem. Some places have greater potential for productivity than others, and can support more species and individuals. In most cases, more productive ecosystems are more stable.

How can ecosystem stability be promoted?
