Accelerated eutrophication is the main cause of increased plant growth

Accelerated eutrophication is caused by pollution, and this in turn leads to deoxygenation of the water. In order to control eutrophication the whole catchment area needs to be managed. It must be ensured that effluents and runoff, which contain nitrates and phosphates do not enter the lake and supply river. Phosphate is the limiting nutrient for plant growth in freshwater lakes. If it is present in large concentrations, growth of plants will be unlimited.
