Project Title:
Measuring and Modelling post-rifting deformation in Afar, Ethiopia.

Project Description:
In September 2005 a 60-km-long rift segment ruptured in Northern Afar, Ethiopia. During which 2.5 km3 of magma (enough to fill Wembley stadium 2000 times) was injected along a vertical crack between the two plates, and the plates were shunted apart by up to 8 metres - equivalent to 500 years of steady spreading. This is the first such episode to occur since modern satellite techniques for measuring Earth deformation have been developed. Using satellites orbiting at 800 km above the Earth's surface I will continue to monitor.
