1. Evolution

There is a fundamental division amongst organisms today between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

In eukaryotes DNA (genetic information) is contained within a discrete package: the nucleus. In prokaryotes the DNA is free and floats in the cell cytoplasm. Also, eukaryotes reproduce sexually - mixing the DNA of two organisms - which allows for more diversity in offspring. Prokaryotes reproduce asexually, by binary fission, passing the same genetic information down through the generations. All bacteria are prokaryotes.
