During the decomposition of organic matter by bacteria, simple organic acids are produced

Decomposed matter

The simple organic acids produced by decomposition of organic matter include acetic acid and oxalic acid as well as carbonic acid. These are important chemicals which aid in the weathering of rocks and minerals in the soil. By this means, the breakdown of organic matter in the soil speeds up the weathering of rocks and increases the supply of nutrient elements for the plants themselves to grow on. Humus is also important in maintaining soil stability, improving soil structure and soil moisture retention.

What does plant decomposition produce?
