3. Photosynthesis

Aquatic plants will grow wherever there are sufficient nutrients and light for them to prosper

Unlike plants on land, aquatic plants live in an environment which already contains the dissolved chemical constituents they require for photosynthesis. Thus they do not need a root system to capture water and dissolved nutrients. The carbon dioxide they require is extracted from gas dissolved in the water.
