Living organisms use respiration to produce the energy they require

Respiration is the reverse of the photosynthesis reaction. Energy released by respiration is used to support metabolism in all living organisms. Most organisms respire aerobically, which requires oxygen. In the process of respiration, simple carbohydrates are broken down to produce water and carbon dioxide. Respiration by micro-organisms and other decomposers is one of the main processes involved in the decomposition of dead plant or animal material.
