5. Sustainability

Commitment at regional level is vital for the achievement of environmentally sustainable development

At a regional level, sustainable development principles can be translated into tangible goals and actions at a scale which is accessible to people's everyday lives. There are by now many regional development strategies under development or in place in various parts of the world.

  • To improve and sustain the water quality and feature of the rivers and their tributaries
  • To establish and support a Local Agenda 21 round table in the area
  • To promote economic prosperity and competitiveness and to help business and industry improve their environmental performance.
  • To encourage use of more sustainable forms of transport and improve accessibility between homes, jobs and other facilities
  • To improve facilities in order to increase tourism value and enhance the areas image
  • To reclaim derelict/contaminated sites so as to stimulate the development of attractive waterside environments for businesses, housing, tourism, heritage, recreation and wildlife
  • To increase the environmental awareness of the public, private, voluntary and community sectors through education
  • To promote better quality of life for all, improving housing conditions, health and security
  • To create links with new and existing strategies being implemented to ensure successful working partnerships
