5. Sustainability

There is a need for widespread social ownership of sustainable development practices.

Sustainable development raises questions about the control of resources, about power over decision making and about the forms of development which should be sought. It raises questions about the types of political organisation and economic ownership that will best give people control over their lives so that they can provide for their own needs in a secure, dignified and environmentally benign way. The Local Agenda 21 initiative was conceived to make these principles a widespread reality.

Local agenda 21 principles

  • managing and improving local sustainability performance
  • integrating sustainability issues into local polices and activities
  • awareness raising and education
  • consulting and involving the wider community and the general public
  • working in partnership with others - central government agencies, business, community groups and the general public
  • measuring, monitoring and reporting
